Every item is thoughtfully chosen, the tones are muted and classy, but everything is brighter, and more relaxed too. After being warmly greeted at the door we were whisked up to the main dining room on the first floor, which boasts a glorious wrap around view of the shops below. Our server was friendly, covered in pin badges which play on the CAU’s name and seemed genuinely excited about the food served in the restaurant. Aside from demonstrating great service, it’s always a wonderful bonus when the staff know more about the food than anyone needs to. It just inspired trust in the recommendations we were given.

As for the menu, CAU has struck a balance by having a good selection without over-facing you with choices. Their wine and à la carte menus are squeezed onto a double side of A3. This is perfect for when you want to go back and forth between your choices, but it didn’t take long for us to make our selections, though. We might have been a little excited and looked at the menu online beforehand… It should be mentioned that food-wise there are a couple of vegetarian options, but CAU and everyone in there are unashamed meat lovers.

CAU Leeds Side orders

After deciding to share some starters (which were devoured before any photos were taken) we started on the Piché wine that we drank throughout the evening. All of CAU’s wines are hand selected to match the food and not available to buy anywhere else; a fact they’re very proud of. Our server was well versed on the wines in-house and everyone had a different favourite — I have to side with the Piché Malbec lovers. All of the staff were brilliant, on hand when we needed them and disappearing when we didn’t.

So, the main event of huge steaks took us forty-five minutes to conquer! CAU’s special ‘lomito’ cut was tender and flavourful, but their sirloin was equally delicious. We did have a small argument about who made the better choice and never came to a definitive answer. Beware that you need to order all of your sides separately, but these aren’t unreasonably priced for the quality you receive.

CAU Leeds Sirlion

Despite being very full, dessert holds a special place in everyone’s heart and had to be done, as did another argument about who made the best choice. The chocolate fondant was perfect, holding its shape but oozing chocolate everywhere; and the churros weren’t photographed before they were eaten.

CAU Leeds Chocolate Muffin

By the end of the night we were very happy and couldn’t have eaten another thing, but maybe could’ve handled a larger coffee than was served. However, when the food is gone before a photo is taken, you know it’s more than good. Thanks for looking after us.
